The Family Exchange is between fifth-grade students at schools in Arlington, VA, and students from our sister city of Aachen, Germany. The exchange is organized through the Arlington Sister City Association (ASCA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 1993 to enhance and promote the region’s international profile and foster productive exchanges in education, commerce, culture and the arts. ASCA is a member of Sister Cities International.
The family of each Arlington student is paired with a matching Aachen partner family. The pairings are made with the help of questionnaires filled out by all. Generally, students are matched with students of the same gender, unless otherwise requested or agreed. Once the families are paired, they receive each other’s e-mail addresses and begin corresponding by email, FaceTime, WhatsApp, Skype, and/or phone.
Each student is accompanied by one of their parents or legal guardians when they travel overseas to spend about a week with their partner families. The Aachen children travel to Arlington in the fall; the Arlington children travel to Aachen during spring break.
